DURHAM, NC- The official statistician of the Can-Am League, Pointstreak, has announced that Sussex County Miners C/INF Martin Figueroa (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Player of the Week for the week ending June 10.

Figueroa completed a strong week at the plate collecting eight hits in 18 at-bats, a .444 clip. Figueroa collected two doubles, a triple, and drove in an impressive nine runs. He also demonstrated his patience by drawing five walks.

The University of Rhode Island product began his week on Wednesday at the New Jersey Jackals, when he was 1-for-4 with an eighth-inning RBI double. The two-bagger was part of a three-run inning for the Miners, who won the game 6-4. Sussex County returned home to host the Jackals in a doubleheader on Thursday, and despite going hitless on the day, Figueroa drew three walks between the two games.

The Miners became the first Can-Am League team to face the traveling team representing the Dominican Republic in 2018, welcoming the Dominicans to Skylands Stadium for a weekend series. Figueroa’s big bat played a key factor in a sweep for the Miners, a series in which Sussex County scored double-digit runs each game. Figueroa was 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI, a walk and a run scored in a 10-4 win in Friday’s series opener, but put together an even more impressive line on Saturday. In an 18-2 triumph, Figueroa was 4-for-6 with his first triple of the season, three RBI and two runs scored. In a weather-shortened contest on Sunday, Figueroa closed out the week with a hit, a walk, two RBI, and a run scored. Sussex County won the game 13-0.

Figueroa is now hitting .391 on the season with four doubles, a triple, and 14 RBI. He is in his first season with the Miners after spending 2017 in the Houston Astros organization. Houston drafted Figueroa in the 32nd round of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft and assigned him to rookie-level Greeneville (Tenn.) of the Appalachian League. There, Figueroa hit .273 in 21 games, collecting two doubles, a home run, and six RBI. Prior to Houston, Figueroa was a key player on a University of Rhode Island team that won the 2016 Atlantic 10 Conference championship.

The Miners will enjoy an off day today, before opening a road series at the Rockland Boulders on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. That game, like all in the Can-Am League, can be seen live and for free at www.canamleague.tv.
