DURHAM, NC- The official statistician of the Can-Am League, Pointstreak, has announced that Quebec Capitales RHP Karl Gelinas (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 20.

The veteran Canadian hurler began his 2018 season with a bang on Thursday, tossing seven shutout frames on Opening Day against the New Jersey Jackals. Gelinas scattered four hits in his outing, and did not walk a batter. He struck out five Jackals, and faced just 22 hitters, one over the minimum for seven innings of work. Quebec won the game 3-0.

Gelinas has been a fixture in the Can-Am League, entering his 12th season as a member of the Capitales. His 2017 season was one of his best in a Quebec uniform, as Gelinas was 9-3 with a 3.27 ERA. In 129.1 innings, Gelinas struck out 91 and walked just 25. Gelinas has won 10 games twice in Quebec, reaching the mark in 2013 and 2015. His lowest season ERA was 1.91 in 11 starts in 2007, his first season in Quebec.

Prior to his stint in the Can-Am League, Gelinas spent four seasons in the Los Angeles Angels organization, reaching the Class AAA level for four games with the Salt Lake Bees over the course of the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

The 3-1 Capitales will enjoy an off day Monday before opening a road series at the Rockland Boulders on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The game, like all in the Can-Am League, can be viewed live and for free at
