MEDEROS’ HOT START NETS PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR

DURHAM, NC- The official statistician of the Can-Am League, Pointstreak, has announced that Sussex County Miners INF Jarred Mederos (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Player of the Week for the week ending May 20.

Mederos has enjoyed a torrid start to the 2018 season, hitting .467 (7-for-15) over the course of his first four games. The Hialeah, Fla. resident has notched two doubles, a home run, and six RBI in helping the Miners to a 2-2 start to their fourth season.

On Opening Day on Thursday, Mederos was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base as his Miners took a 10-3 win on the road at the Rockland Boulders. The series shifted to Sussex County’s Skylands Stadium on Friday, and Mederos picked up a hit in a 6-3 defeat in the Miners’ home opener. Mederos’ second multi-hit game of the season occurred in the opening game of a Sunday doubleheader, as he was 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, and three runs driven in en route to a 6-5 road win at Rockland. He recorded another extra-base hit in the twinbill’s nightcap. Mederos was 1-for-3 with a double in game two, walking once, stealing a base and scoring two of the Miners’ runs. Rockland edged Sussex County 8-7 to split the doubleheader.

Mederos is in the midst of his second season with Sussex County. He played in 95 games with the 2017 Miners, batting .210 with 10 doubles, a triple, three home runs, and 25 RBI. He also racked up 23 steals during the duration of the 2017 campaign. Prior to arriving in Sussex County, Mederos spent two seasons in the American Association. He played in 56 games with the Laredo Lemurs and Gary SouthShore RailCats in 2015, and returned to Gary in 2016, hitting .268 with 18 doubles, a triple, two home runs, and 38 RBI in 90 games.

Mederos played collegiately at St. John’s University.

Sussex County will enjoy an off day on Monday and Tuesday before resuming their season with a 7:05 p.m. contest on Wednesday at home against the Trois-Rivieres Aigles. The game, like all in the Can-Am League, can be seen live and for free at www.canamleague.tv.
