DURHAM, NC- The official statistician of the Can-Am League, Pointstreak, has announced that Quebec Capitales RHP Sean Donatello (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 8.
Donatello was nearly untouchable in three appearances out of the Capitales’ bullpen this week, logging six shutout innings while allowing just two hits and no walks. He struck out nine opposing hitters over the course of his six frames.
The Salem, Conn. resident began his week on Tuesday at home against the Trois-Rivieres Aigles, working around a hit to complete a scoreless inning of relief. Donatello struck out two in the inning, but Quebec fell 6-3. He returned to the mound on Thursday in the series finale against the Aigles, and logged a dazzling three innings of relief work. The only batter to reach base against Donatello in the game was courtesy of a hit by pitch, and he struck out four Aigles hitters. The outing helped Quebec keep the game tied at 2-2, and ultimately be in position to earn a 3-2 win in 10 innings.
Donatello’s final relief appearance of the week came on Saturday at the Sussex County Miners, when he recorded two more scoreless innings. Donatello worked around a hit and struck out three in an 8-7 win by the Capitales.
On the season, Donatello is 1-1 with a 2.65 ERA and five saves. Over his 19 appearances, he has logged 20.1 innings pitched and an impressive 27:5 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Donatello is in the midst of his first season in a Quebec uniform. He was a 25th-round pick of the Florida Marlins in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft out of the University of Connecticut at Avery Point, and spent six seasons in the Marlins system. With the Marlins, Donatello reached as high as the Class AA level, where he pitched in 74 games with Jacksonville (Fla.) in 2015 and 2016. Most recently, Donatello spent the 2017 season in the Detroit Tigers organization, primarily pitching for the Class AA Erie (Pa.) Seawolves, but also earning his first taste of the AAA level in three appearances for the Toledo (Ohio) Mud Hens.
Quebec will open a road series at the Trois-Rivieres Aigles tonight at 7:05 p.m. The game, like all in the Can-Am League, can be seen live and for free at www.canamleague.tv.
