RAY’S HIT STREAK LEADS TO PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR

DURHAM, NC- The official statistician of the Can-Am League, Pointstreak, has announced that Sussex County Miners OF Jayce Ray (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Player of the Week for the week ending July 22.

Ray currently owns a nine-game hitting streak, and recorded a hit in all seven games he played this week. He hit .409 (9-for-22) this week, adding a pair of doubles, a home run, and nine RBI to his line. His efforts helped lead Sussex County to an undefeated week.

The Sonoma, Calif. resident opened his week on Wednesday with a doubleheader against the Rockland Boulders. In the opening game, he was 1-for-3 with a double, RBI, and run scored as Sussex County won 4-0. Ray continued his hit streak with a 1-for-4 night in a 4-3 triumph in the nightcap.

Ray’s best game of the week occurred in the opener of a five-game series on Thursday night on the road against the New Jersey Jackals. Ray went 3-for-5 in the contest, falling a triple shy of the cycle, driving in three runs and scoring three more. Sussex County rolled 18-1. The Miners won on the road against the Jackals again on Friday by a 7-4 score. In the game, Ray was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, an RBI and two runs scored. The series shifted to Sussex County’s home stadium, Skylands Stadium on Saturday. Ray was 1-for-4 with an RBI in the game, won by the Miners 7-3. Ray and the Miners concluded their week with a doubleheader on Sunday. In the opening game, he was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored in an 8-3 Miners win. Sussex County capped off the perfect week with a 5-2 win in the second game, and Ray was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

On the season, Ray is hitting .301 with 13 doubles, six triples, and three home runs. He has driven in 42 runs in his 56 games, tying him for fifth on the Can-Am League leaderboard.

Ray is in the midst of his first season with the Miners. He began his professional career in 2013 with the Windy City Thunderbolts of the Frontier League, hitting .286 over 37 games, and moved on to the Sonoma Stompers of the Pacific Association in 2014. Ray hit .355 in 64 games with the Stompers, earning him the opportunity to suit up for the Wichita Wingnuts of the American Association 2015. Ray posted another strong season in Wichita, hitting .310 in 89 games. The pinnacle of Ray’s career occurred in 2016, when he signed a free agent deal with the Boston Red Sox. He appeared in 47 games across three levels, playing with the Class AA Portland Sea Dogs, Class A Advanced Salem Red Sox, and Class A Greenville Drive. Ray hit .340 with 10 doubles during his tenure with the Red Sox. He returned to independent baseball in 2017, hitting .289 with the Sioux City Explorers of the American Association.
